‘The paintings should surprise, like the view from a window or onto a stage. They should create space and light, be present in the room and be complex.’

Christoph Schellberg

We are delighted to present the exhibition A Day, The Night and Tomorrow by Christoph Schellberg.
The mostly small-format abstract paintings are an in-depth exploration of the medium of painting.
Centered by the artist’s frame made especially for the painting, Schellberg directs our gaze to the process of the painting and its profound questions – glazed layers of paint, brushstrokes and gestures overlap and form a multi-layered structure.
As a painter, Schellberg is aware of the tradition and technical possibilities of his medium. He distrusts the overly frivolous theoretical proclamations of the end of painting, instead relying on the fundamental elements of painting – colour, line, space, light and time. These determine his paintings making them both a field of experimentation and a level of reflection, and giving them their unmistakable expression of questioning the supposed veracity of photographic images.

Christoph Schellberg (*1973, Düsseldorf) lives and works in Düsseldorf.
His works have been shown in numerous international exhibitions, including the Kunstmuseum Mülheim an der Ruhr, Marta Museum, Herford, Deutsche Bundesbank, Frankfurt, Museum Franz Gertsch, Burgdorf, Switzerland, Museum Morsbroich, Leverkusen, Suermondt Ludwig Museum, Aachen, Wilkinson Gallery, London, Galerie Bernd Kugler, Innsbruck, Austria, Jablonka Lühn, Cologne.
The artist is represented in various international institutional collections, including Sammlung zeitgenössische Kunst der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, Museum Frieder Burda, Baden-Baden, Wellin Museum of Art, Clinton, NY, USA, Sammlung Deutsche Bundesbank, Frankfurt, Sammlung Brandhorst, Munich, Sammlung Falkenberg, Hamburg, Sammlung Ringier, Zurich, Switzerland, SSK Stiftung, Cologne, CCA Andratx, Mallorca, Spain, Sammlung Schürmann, Berlin & Herzogenrath, Sammlung Deutsche Bank AG, Frankfurt.
